Google is a very big name in the world of technology. In India and other countries, it is well known for its search engine, Gmail, Android, and YouTube platform. But now this tech giant is in the news for another reason. It comes with a settlement in a big case, the YouTube children privacy lawsuit. This Google lawsuit talks about how data of children under 13 was collected without permission.

The privacy issue caught attention of millions of people, and now the settlement is finally announced. In this article, we talk about what this Google lawsuit is, why it happened, how many people are included, what the rules of earlier cases were, and what it means for the future of YouTube and Google.

Google YouTube Privacy Lawsuit Settlement

The Google YouTube privacy lawsuit is about children under 13 years old. Many parents said that Google collected personal information of kids without their consent and used it for ads. After years of legal fights, now Google has agreed to pay 30 million dollars as part of this case. This money will go to the people who were part of this class action. This Google lawsuit covers the time between July 2013 and April 2020, and it is seen as one of the major cases related to children’s online privacy.

Why the Google Lawsuit Started

The lawsuit started when parents of 34 children filed the case in California. They said that even after the 2019 settlement, Google and YouTube continued to collect information from kids. In the past, Google already paid 170 million dollars for breaking the rules of COPPA, which is the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. This time again, parents said that kids were targeted with cartoon videos and nursery rhymes while their data was secretly tracked. Because of this, the court allowed this case to move forward.

How Many People Are Part of This Case

The class action is very large. It is said that nearly 35 to 45 million children in the United States under the age of 13 were watching YouTube during that time. If only 1% or 2% of families apply for a claim, then each of them could get between 30 to 60 dollars. From this settlement, lawyers will also take some amount as fees, which is around 9 million dollars. Some big companies like Hasbro, Mattel, and Cartoon Network were also named earlier, but later their names were dropped because not enough proof was found against them.

Earlier Privacy Cases Against Google

This is not the first time Google has faced such issues. In 2019, the company already paid a very big fine of 170 million dollars to the US Federal Trade Commission and the New York Attorney General. That was the biggest fine at that time for privacy violations under COPPA. After that, YouTube announced new tools for marking videos as “made for kids” and creators had to follow the rules. Even mislabeling a video could cost more than 40 thousand dollars in penalty.

Google also promised more training and stricter policies about children content. But still, complaints came again, and this new lawsuit was filed.

What It Means for Google and YouTube

The Google lawsuit shows that children’s safety and data protection are still very serious issues. Even after earlier cases, this new settlement proves that more strict steps are needed. Google will now try to make its platform safer, and parents will also expect better protection. Families included in the case may get their share of money, but the bigger point is that privacy rules must be followed in the future.

This case will also remind creators to be more careful when they upload content for kids. The YouTube privacy settlement is another sign that data privacy will remain under strong check in coming years.
