Apple has released a new update, iOS 26.3.1. However, it contains no new features. This entire update is solely for security purposes. Apple has dubbed it a Background Security Improvement. This means security fixes are applied silently in the background.
How to Install?
If you are currently on iOS 26.3, the update will appear in the standard location: Settings → General → Software Update. If you are already running iOS 26.3.1, you will need to install it as follows:
Steps to Install
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and navigate to Privacy & Security.
- At the very bottom, you will find the Background Security Improvements option.
- Tap on it, and the update will appear there.
If the update does not appear, try toggling the feature off and then back on; the update should then become visible. The update file size is somewhat large because it performs a complete reinstallation of the operating system in the background.
What Has Been Fixed?
Only one security issue has been addressed.
There was a minor bug within WebKit the engine powering Safari that could allow malicious web content to bypass the Same Origin Policy. Apple has now patched this vulnerability and has also released a corresponding CVE number.
In practical terms, this makes it slightly more difficult for hackers to exploit the system. For this reason, Apple strongly recommends that all users install this update.
Impact on Performance and Battery Life?
I tested the update on an iPhone 17 Pro. There was no noticeable difference in Geekbench scores; both single-core and multi-core results remained virtually unchanged.
Battery performance also remains normal. You may experience slight device heating immediately after the update since the entire OS is being reinstalled, but everything should return to normal within a day or two.
If you are not satisfied with the update or encounter any issues, you can actually uninstall it. Simply go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Background Security Improvements → Remove & Restart.
Your phone will revert to the previous version 26.3.1 without requiring a computer. This is a fantastic feature.
iPadOS and macOS, too
Along with this, Apple has also released iPadOS 26.3.1A and macOS 26.3.1A. All of them include the same security fix.
What’s Next?
iOS 26.4 is coming very soon. It is not yet confirmed when the RC Release Candidate version will arrive. iOS 26.4 is also essential for the AirPods Max 2, which is set to launch in April.
Final Suggestion
This may be a small update, but it is crucial when it comes to security. My suggestion is to go ahead and install it. If you encounter any issues, simply uninstall it immediately, no need to worry. Have you installed the update yet? How are the battery life and performance holding up? Let us know in the comments!
