Is iPhone 16 banned in Indonesia

As we know, Apple launched their new iPhone 16 series a few days ago and it is also being sold throughout the world, but the story of iPhone 16 is totally different for Indonesia.

The selling of iPhone 16 series seems to be banned in Indonesia. However, there has been no official announcement from the Indonesian government, but according to reports the sale of iPhone 16 may be banned.

Let’s know is iPhone 16 is really banned in Indonesia, if yes then what is the reason behind this.

Is iPhone 16 really banned in Indonesia?

Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita reportedly said that the iPhone 16 of Apple may not be allowed to be sold due to lack of certification, as Apple has not met the expected investment requirements yet.

Not listed on many major e-commerce platforms

Many major e-commerce platforms in Indonesia, such as Tokopedia, Blibli, and Lazada, have not listed the iPhone 16, although its accessories are available on these platforms, but not the phone.

Not being sold even on the official website

Even the iPhone 16 or its new model is not being sold on Apple’s official Indonesian website, indicating that perhaps a ban exists, even if a formal government order has not been issued.

Controversy over investment

This whole matter is related to investment. So far, Apple has invested only 1.48 trillion rupiah out of a commitment of 1.71 trillion rupiah, leaving a shortfall of 230 billion rupiah. This shortfall affects TKDN certification, which mandates 40 percent local content for foreign devices sold in Indonesia.

This is what Minister Kartasasmita said

Minister Kartasasmita told Kompas, “We, the Ministry of Industry, cannot issue approval for the iPhone 16 yet, as Apple still has to fulfill some commitments.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Indonesia

Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Jakarta and met with President Joko Widodo to discuss manufacturing possibilities. However, until Apple fulfills its commitment to further invest in Indonesian facilities, including the establishment of local Apple Academies for R&D, the future of the iPhone 16 in the Indonesian market remains in limbo.
