Samsung S24 and S24 Plus: Displays and design

Samsung changed the sizes of the screens in Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus by enlarging them a little bit without significantly increasing the size of the phone.

The S24 Plus increased 6.7 inches from 6.6 inches, and the S24 increased from 6.1 inches to 6.2 inches respectively; it is taller than before with slightly less bezel.

Both phones are now brighter when in direct sunlight with brightness levels reaching up to a maximum of 2600 nits, which is not much of an improvement anyway.

Besides that, this is the new home for a full HD display with resolutions tuned up to QHD on Galaxy S24 Plus but the latter’s edges are no longer softly curved; instead they are flat like iPhones making them more comfortable to hold.

One remarkable development is that they have replaced curved edges with flat sides similar to iPhones.

This means that there is no risk of it slipping out of your hand because it has been designed in such a way as to be easily picked up due to its flat-edge design, yet still feels as good as ever when you’re holding it.

Samsung took some concepts from Apple, like One UI 6.1 adding wallpaper dimming for always-on displays present in recent Pro iPhones.

In addition, these phones come equipped with widgets below under clock that can show you how much battery power you have left or what events are coming up on your calendar without having to turn on your device all over again which makes them something unique about Samsung’s latest series known as S24 only.

Samsung S24 and S24 Plus: Performance, Battery, and Software

When people in the United States purchase the Galaxy S24 or S24 Plus, they get a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset – as does the Ultra. However, outside the US, these models use one of Samsung’s own Exynos chips.

Testing of the Snapdragon versions S24 and S24Plus showed no performance issues. While the base model S24 (including the review unit) comes with 8GB RAM, its bigger brother has 12GB RAM. Day-to-day performance didn’t show any significant differences between them.

After using all three phones from the SARS series, we found their battery performance was alike on all three phones. The larger the phone is, the more power it takes up but luckily there is a bigger battery.

This issue seemed to be addressed now mostly with smaller batteries and power efficient chips when earlier generations had noticeable issues with smaller device sizes.

One thing that was missing here was support for Qi2. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with any MagSafe style compatibility either.

In 2024, Samsung continues to ship its high-end phones with three-button navigation by default. Sometimes when using a Galaxy phone, like the S24 devices it’s common to spend some time tweaking Samsungs default settings.

In this case we might want to avoid triggering Bixby when we long press the power button and ensure that the app drawer is organized in a straightforward manner.

It’s a matter of putting in an effort initially to personalize the phone according to our preferences.

Samsung S24 and S24 Plus: Price

S24 starts at $799 while S24 Plus can be purchased for $999. Only this year did Ultra also hit $1,299.

The devices hereafter called non-Ultra to remove ambiguity on screen sizes will share almost similar functionalities at this point in time making them interchangeable for purposes of this review.

The gap between regular and Ultra models widened but going up to Ultra does not offer many more advantages.

You do get a larger better screen, more zooms, an S Pen; however a good number of those features are shared with cheaper models.

Samsung Vs Pixel 8 Pro

It is difficult to say that the S24 is a clear winner when compared to Pixel. The S24 is great once everything has been set as we want it to be.

While Pixel phones run smoother software out of the box, Samsung makes users work harder for it.

For instance, Pixel 8 Pro does not support widgets on an always-on display like the S24, but at a Glance gives useful information with no effort.

Samsung and Google have become direct rivals in offering seven years of software updates for flagship phones including operating system upgrades and security updates.

This is particularly important for the S24 and S24 Plus which are more likely to stay with their owners longer as opposed to an Ultra owner who keeps chasing after the latest technology.

Unlike the Pixel 8 series, all S24 devices across its range have AI features at par with each other except that some are only available in larger and costlier pixel 8 pro despite using the same processor.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra also contains unique AI features as in S24 such as voice transcription, summaries, phone call translation, generative AI photo editing, etc.
